Approval of the agenda was done.
National Foresters Fund was moved to the top.
Up Auto Tour was put under "Old Business"
Rockwell 1st and Dickmann 2nd the Agenda, all were in favor.

Approval of the minutes: Mittlestat
Motion to approve the minutes made. McNichols 1st Rockwell 2nd

Chair: Howlett

There were three success stories submitted to National by the MSAF.
"Day in the Life," Legislative Tour, and the Auto Tour.

Issue to be raised in future possibly in a SAF Position Statement: Nursery Stock moving across state lines and relate it to the movement of invasive species. Propose to Council for SAF Position Statement.

Richard Stephenson - the DNR Service Forester from Newberry will be the MSAF rep to MiBCI. Might need support money from MSAF if he needs to attend any meetings in person. Might need to present a budget for travel to the Executive Team.

Dickmann: Could shift the $500 that was set aside for Heym to go to the Leadership Academy to Richard since the DNR backed Doug. No disagreement in the following discussion.

Council Report: Hubbard

The convention is in Pittsburg at the end of October this year. We will have several people there representing MSAF.

The "Roots of Forestry" is up and running on the internet for the National Journal and Regional Journals of Forestry from their first issues to present.

The Society as a whole needs to look at retention of members. We are loosing members when they are in the 20-30 year old range. Seems if SAF is able to hold them for 10 years they stay for life. National is looking at a flat dues schedule and giving discounts for the early years. State Chapters charge different due rates and these get tacked on after the National Dues which comes as a surprise to some people. They are going to be looking at dropping the number of membership categories down to maybe two types, "National" and "International."

Pilon: Asked if there had been any analysis done to show that money is a significant issue? Hubbard: Not sure if it's the money or it may be that members don't feel that SAF provides their money's worth. Howlett: We don't do enough to vocalize nationally that we are doing good things as a society. Moll: What are the pros and cons of a lifetime membership? There was quite a bit of discussion on "What is SAF doing for us?" If anyone has any suggestions get them to Hubbard.

The first year of the new Fellows process has been completed. There were only two nominations this year in our District. National is looking at tweaking it again to get more people nominated. Nationally there was probably half as many as past years.

Certification Review Board: Several states are looking at the CF Exam for State registration and licensing of Foresters.

Howlett: We need to work at having articles in the newsletter about the awards we offer since we always have problems coming up with candidates.

Treasures Report: Pilon

We made $500 on the Spring meeting…which is about what we were expecting. Dues from national are all in now. There was $1150 spent on the MI Forester and there is $1200 budgeted for it. $1500 was spent on the Auto Tour. The Policy and Legislative tour were a bit under budget. We have $3788.57 in cash on hand now.

The MI Education Fund: We made $610 in tickets which is about $200 lower than normal. $1600 from the Forester Fund Grant for the UP Chapter to the UP Auto Tour. $500 in Forester Fund grant is sitting for a legislative event that has never happened. We spend general fund money on it instead. It was discussed that it should be transferred to ours Education Fund to refund some of it? Other states use forester fund money for meetings and to bring in speakers etc.

We have $4421 in the MI Foresters Education Fund, of which $406.67 will be given to the national Foresters Fund.

Dickmann: About 70 people registered for the meeting tomorrow. Wee will need to divvy up some of the money with the MI Rx Fire Council. It was discussed that a 50/50 split be made of registration money. The raffle will stay MSAF money. There was a motion to accept the budget. Dickmann 1st and Hamel 2nd. No objections.
